Traducido a muchos idiomas y multitud de veces editado, este clásico sudafricano está compuesto a partir de relatos que el autor contaba a sus cuatro hijos a la hora de dormir. KIPLING [1], amigo del autor, que algunas veces presenció la escena, fue quien le animó a convertir esas historias en un libro. Está bien escrito y tiene unas descripciones precisas y vivas de la naturaleza. En paralelo con Jock, el mismo Bushveld o País Bajo, un extenso territorio de tierras agrestes, es un personaje más del relato. De hecho, el libro contiene mucha información sobre animales y sus costumbres, aparte de tener algo de historia de aprendizaje del narrador. Al final contiene un diccionario de los términos específicamente surafricanos.
El único animal odiado
Una idea de las descripciones del libro la puede dar esta introducción a la aparición en escena del cocodrilo (cuya traducción dejo a los expertos): «There is nothing that one comes across in hunting more horrible and loathsome than the crocodile: nothing that rouses the feeling of horror and hatred as it does: nothing that so surely and quickly gives the sensation of ‘creeps in the back’ as the noiseless apparition of one in the water just where you least expected anything, or the discovery of one silently and intently watching you with its head resting flat on a sand-spit —the thing you had seen half a dozen times before and mistaken for a small rock. Many things are hunted in the Bushveld; but only the crocodile is hated. There is always the feeling of horror that this hideous, cowardly, cruel thing —the enemy of man and beast alike— with its look of a cunning smile in the greeny glassy eyes and great wide mouth, will mercilessly drag you down-down-down to the bottom of some deep still pool, and hold you there till you drown».
